Websites
BrainPOP Jr. - https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/communities/communityhelpers/preview.weml - On BrainPOP Jr. students have the opportunity to watch an interactive video and take either an easy or hard quiz about community helpers. This site does require a login and password, which many school districts would have provided for their teachers.
Education.com - http://www.education.com/games/community-helpers-quiz/ - On education.com students are able to take a fun quiz about the roles of different community helpers. The sight provides verbal instruction as well as picture representation of answers which is helpful for ELL students and students in the emergent stage of literacy development. The site also has worksheets that are relevant to the topic of community helpers.
Scholastic - http://teacher.scholastic.com/commclub/index.htm - This Scholastic resource gives students the opportunity to read level A books about community helpers. Students can use the read aloud function and read at their own pace with assistance if they need it. After reading, students are able to complete a short quiz about what they read/listened to.
Music and Songs: Community Helpers - http://www.preschooleducation.com/shelper.shtml - This website has various songs on many community helpers! It would be an engaging way for student to learn about and remember what various community workers do. Singing a song also presents the students with a different way of learning by incorporating music instead of just writing with pencil and paper.
YouTube - Community Helpers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__T933kP0Bw - This short video names and describe several community workers. I found this video useful because it not only says the name of the worker and defines what they do, but the name is left there on the screen for the children to see and there are pictures of each worker to help ESOL learners who may not understand who some of the workers are.
Mrs. Nelson’s Class - Community Helpers Unit - http://www.mrsnelsonsclass.com/teacherresources/thematicunits/communityhelpers.aspx - This website has a unit created for community helpers. This would be a useful resource to find additional ideas and activities for the students to take part in when learning about the community. This website has power points, activities, coloring pages, writing prompts, songs, and more. When looking for additional resources for my unit this will be a great place to come.
Safari Montage - http://safarimontage.com - This resource requires a log in that can be provided if the county or school has funding. There are countless videos, and other media, that can be used in the classroom and are all approved as appropriate. These range from popular names such as Bill Nye and School House Rock to specific history channel documentaries.
Nick Junior - Paw Pups Save the Day Game - http://www.nickjr.com/kids-games/paw-pups-save-the-day.html - This game will be fun for students who need a break from lessons, but still has a community helper theme. The student must pick the pup who has an appropriate skill to complete the task at hand. Then they will play a short game and save the animal in danger.
PBS Kids - Curious George: On the Job Game - http://pbskids.org/cgi-registry/curiousgeorge/on_the_job.pl - This game allows students to practice matching a community member to an appropriate item or tool. This includes police officers, mailpersons, and members of the community, such as a man who needs skis.
Promethean Planet - People at Work Resource Pack - http://www.prometheanplanet.com/en-us/Resources/Item/43711/people-at-work-resource-pack#.VPVB_0vFVg - This resource pack has over 120 photographs of people at work. The photographs can be used in combination with cartoons and other media to illustrate for students what individuals of a particular job look like, and what supplies they use. Having multiple pictures of the same job will also help break and/or prevent stereotypes students may have about who is qualified to have a position.
